In my role as a Connected Learning Consultant in the NSW Department of Education and Training, and in particular the Hunter Central Coast Region, in mid-2008 I bonded with (and saw an ease of application for) the Revised Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy as presented by Andrew Churches. I have prepared many a presentation, and scaffolded many web 2 tools into this 6 level construct. Using this method to introduce people to the incorporation of technology into existing planning and teaching and learning practice has been a fantastic and unobtrusive method to engage staff beginning their journey into teaching with ubiquitous technology. It really has been a fantastic scaffold for many, many staff to adhere their change to.
In my presentations, I always felt a little, thin-on in the analysis, synthesis and evaluation levels. I felt many of these tools were alike, and focused predominantly on collaborations and discussions.
And so came time for me to rethink the taxonomy and my belief in it as scaffold for using laptops in the NSW Digital Education Revolution 1:1 Laptop Environment.
Through Roger Pryor’s leadership, our Connected Learning Plan in the Hunter / Central Coast Region hinges on the 3 verbs of Connect-Collaborate-Create as a method for planning school. These 3 innocent yet powerful verbs have begun to provide a scaffold for change into the Digital Education Revolution for all staff at all levels of the system. From classroom teaching and learning scaffolds to whole scale systemic change, Connect-Collaborate-Create is providing us with a focus and structure to build on.
For me, these verbs struck as a great construct for using Web 2 Tools in any classroom or learning environment. The 3 levels, in my mind, help teaching and learning to remain focused, moving forward and engaging.

To see this taxonomy in action, please take your time to work through the presentation below. All website graphics have been hyperlinked to help you visit the sites mentioned.
In Bloom’s Taxomony and its derivatives, the higher-order thinking levels are the smallest, thus implicitly leaving us
with the impression that these activities take the least amount of time. For me the higher-order thinking level of creation should take the largest amount of time, letting students construct their new understandings in a relaxed and yet engaged manner. I also believe strongly that as the Internet provides us with information in the click of a button, we should be able to complete information gathering lower-order thinking levels in a shorter period of time, letting us collaborate about and with the information and create new understandings from it with more time ‘up our sleeve’.
Stay tuned. More on my C-C-C Taxonomy to come…..
