TTT Day Coming Up

Triple T Day

is a great opportunity to spread the word about the excellent ways in which your students are using their “talents, treasures and time for the common good,” and for you to speak about the benefits of TTT and service-learning across your community.  It is a time to reflect with your community about the service goals and learning goals your students are planning to achieve, and their progress towards achieving these goals.  A few schools will have completed their TTT (or service-learning) projects, many will still be developing them, others will just be in the planning stages – it doesn’t matter what stage you are up to, pause to celebrate with your community on 25th September.

TTT Day in your school - 25th September

TTT Day

This information is to help you plan your TTT Day.

Late in October, public exhibitions will be held for schools involved in TTT and service-learning.  You and your TTT student leaders will be invited to an exhibition where you can demonstrate your TTT/service-learning project and speak to other schools and community members who would be interested in becoming involved in TTT/service-learning next year.  You will be receiving more information nearer that time.

TTT Day Goal.

Community recognition of the progress of students, teachers and partners towards achievening their TTT/service-learning goal.

Description:

On TTT Day, hold a ceremony to recognize the service and learning achievements of your students, teachers and partners as they move towards reaching their TTT/service-learning goal.

Getting Started:

  •  Plan the program: decide the scope and who should attend. Make it short, informal and fun.

  • Select a time that will make it convenient for project participants, especially parents and community partners to attend.

  • Decide who you will invite – if your project is sufficiently advanced, you might invite government representatives to learn about your program, and of course, the media.

  • Issue formal invitations where necessary.

  • If presenting awards, decide who will make the award presentations.

  • Decide what type of recognition you wish to give – your own certificates or small items.

  • Determine how many people will be acknowledged and how they will be chosen.

  • If necessary, develop a small budget or list of items needed for your event.

  • Decide whether you will serve refreshments; how they can be paid for, and who will be in charge.

  • Write up a brief description of the planned TTT/service-learning project, the impact on the students and on their community – this description can be used at the ceremony and for any media.

  • Organise someone to take photos and note the names of those being taken.

  • Make sure proper releases have been signed, so you can provide pictures to the media as well as uploading them to your school web site and putting them in the school newsletter.

  • Let us know what you are planning and how we can help (we may be able to attend).

  • Enjoy your special event – let us know how it goes – send in a brief write-up of your project (below), a description of your TTT day celebration and attach some photographs.

Pilot schools ready to roll… and well done to our Triple T team and attendees!

Blogging tonight from the Student Volunteering and Servive Learning Workshop being held by DET schools.  On the continuum of volunteering, service learning sits right at the authentic learning end.

Oh, and last week we had two half day ‘Triple T days.  If you’d like to know more, click the Triple T tab at the top of the page.  While you are there, why not click the Triple J tab and send us any ideas you have for how we can get people engaged in a style of learning which has an objective of facilitating the attainment of an outcome which is real, relevant and reliable in the eyes of the learner.

Thanks to Matthew and Annabel and the rest of the student team..as well as all others..Margaret et al..incidental feedback I have had has been positive.  Once again..why not hit the comment link to comment..?

Service Learning - Some local school examples

At the first Service Learning Network meeting for 2009. local schools reported on some of the projects they have been involved with.

This might provide some starting information for other schools or groups interested.  Don’t forget to also follow the variuous links to find out more about servive learning and, don’t forget, that Service Learning is critically linked to learning and syllabus outcomes.  The service is then both and outcomes and the means by which necessary learning outcomes are identified and made relevant.

Service Learning in Action

This video is a good look at the way that Service Learning can create a different view of the ways in which learning becomes valued: when it is integral to a task being undertaken out of recognition of a benefit which is community based.

An excerpt from the blurb follows….

The Service Learning Program promotes intellectual growth, self-awareness, community engagement, and social entrepreneurship.

Service learning at Sage Hill School is founded on a vision of a world where education and youth social entrepreneurship co-exist. This vision invites students to put their expertise to work by joining with others to bring about change in the broader community.

Would love to hear from people who may have Australian examples, or who might want to post a video or podcast..

What is Service Learning?

I like the focus on curriculum in this video on YouTube.  You may find that you are not able to view this from some networks due to filtering.

Service Learning exciting attention in Hunter schools for 2009.

At a network meeting held today, representatives of a number of schools indicated their clear commitment to Service Learning and the way in which it provides an opportunity to look at the processes which underpin the acquisition of knowledge which is relevant to the needs and context of the learner, while contributing to the growth in capacity and social capital of the communities in which they live.

Watch out in ‘official’ communication channels for more news about the TTT (triple T) sessions which are coming up and which already have student representatives on the co-ordinating committee heavily committed to the planning and delivery of a high quality day.

Don’t forget, if you are a visitor to this site from one of our schools or allied organisations in the Hunter, please feel free to use the link on the ‘Resources‘ page, to suggest resources or links which you have found useful.  Your shared experience would be extremely valuable to demonstrate to others just what this all ‘looks like.’
